Salay (also known as Salae) is a much more religious center and has many more working monasteries than Bagan. Salay is the native town of the famous writer Salay U Pone Nya during the time of the Myanmar Kings. It is about 1 ½ hours’ drive south of Bagan. You can enjoy the atmosphere of the colonial buildings and the ruins north of town, monasteries and pagodas. The famous and primary attraction is "Yoke-Sone-Kyaung’’
Salay Yoke Sone Kyaung , a cultural heritage site in Salay, is situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River, and It is famous with its spectacular woodcarvings. It was built in AD 1882. The remain are very lovely artistic work woodcarvings and also ancient Buddha image, heads old pottery and tablets that may date from 11 to 13 century period, and the museum of Myanmar famous writer U Pone Nya in Salay Yoke Sone Kyaung.
